SUPERIOR — The University of Wisconsin-Superior and Yellowjacket Athletics on Thursday, Aug. 28, released plans for a new baseball and softball complex on campus.

Funded with $14.97 million from the state’s 2025-27 Capital Budget, the complex will be located on the site of the former outdoor track next to Wessman Arena along North 28th Street, according to UWS Director of Marketing and Communications Sarah Libbon.

The new complex will feature artificial turf playing surfaces, dugouts, bullpens, batting cages, spectator seating and field lighting, according to a news release.

“This project represents a significant investment in our student-athletes and athletic programs,” UWS Director of Athletics Nick Bursik said in a prepared statement. “We are grateful to our state representatives and partners across the Universities of Wisconsin for recognizing the value this project brings — not only to our campus, but to the entire region.”

UWS hopes to complete the complex by the 2027-2028 school year. UWS is working with the state and the Universities of Wisconsin to finalize the timeline, according to the news release.

Currently the UWS baseball and softball teams are renting community fields, primarily at Superior High School.

“I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to train and compete right here on campus,” Melissa Fracker, head softball coach, said in a statement.

“This project will drastically enhance the student-athlete experience,” TJ Oakes, head baseball coach, said in a statement. From consistent practice times to access for extra training, having a home field on campus will allow our athletes to grow and thrive like never before.”

UWS will launch a
