Rockies Report, Game 134:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Christian Walker’s solo home run in the eighth inning off Colorado reliever Luis Peralta provided the decisive blow in a 4-3 defeat that sent the Rox to another series loss and ended a gloomy six-game road swing in which the Rockies won just once.

The Rockies had rallied from a 3-0 deficit after two innings, scoring in each of the third, fourth and fifth frames. The first run came home after two singles and a hit batter (Tyler Freeman) loaded the bases; Mickey Moniak drove home Braxton Fulford with a groundout.

Shortstop Ezequiel Tovar drew the Rox within one run with his eighth homer of the campaign, a solo shot that saw him pull a changeup just over the right-field fence in the fourth inning.

One inning later, Yanquiel Fernández drew Colorado even with his second major-league home run, again at the expense of a Jason Alexander changeup, and again just barely over the right-field fence. But Colorado would produce no more offense for the balance of the afternoon.

The Rockies fell to 38-96.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Kyle Freeland would love to have the first inning back.

A pair of fastballs — one high to Jose Altuve, one in the heart of the zone to Walker — were punished, landing in the Crawford Boxes and just inside the right-field foul pole, respectively, putting Colorado into a quick 2-0 hole.

Three consecutive singles — the last of which was a César Salazar bunt — put a third run on the board in the second; Freeland nearly compounded the damage with an off-balance, awkwardly-angled throw that sailed past Warming Bernabel and into right field for Colorado’s only error of the game.

But that would be the Astros’ last run at Freeland’s expense.

Freeland got two fly balls in his next three pitches to escape the inning, and allowed three singles over the following four innings, never letting a runner advance past second base thereafter. He didn’t walk an Astro and struck out six in notching his 11th quality start of the season and his first since earlier this month at St. Louis, leaving with a no-decision.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Jordan Beck took a slider at the bottom of the zone for strike three with Mickey Moniak on first base in the ninth inning to end the game.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 13 — Strikeouts for the Rockies on Thursday. Six Rockies struck out at least twice.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Rox return to Coors Field to start a homestand with a series against the Chicago Cubs. Germán Márquez gets the call for Colorado; Cade Horton starts the opener for the Cubbies. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m. MDT.
