Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia was placed on the injured list with a right oblique strain on Tuesday in a surprise move.

Vesia revealed the injury flared up while playing catch a few days prior, and he believes his stint on the IL should be short-term. The left-hander provided the latest update on his return timeline.

“There was no pull or grab or anything that made me concerned,” Vesia said. “I think (Roberts), all of our training staff is on the same page, just making sure that we knock it out now, make sure it doesn’t get worse. There’s no need to push it. I’m very confident that I can resume throwing in my normal routine. So we’ll take it one day at a time, and I believe in the 15 days we’ll be good to go.”

While there’s no firm date, Vesia appears confident he will return to the Dodgers bullpen after the minimum 15 days, which would be mid-September.

The Dodgers pitching staff is no stranger to injuries to this season, and Vesia is the latest arm to be sidelined. The lefty emerged as one of the Dodgers’ most reliable high-leverage relievers this season.

Vesia is sporting a 2.75 ERA with 69 strikeouts across 52.1 innings pitched. The left-hander last pitched against the Colorado Rockies, where he tossed a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
