BOSTON — Jhonkensy Noel had an action-packed day Monday at Fenway Park.

Noel was one of three players added to the Guardians when rosters were expanded from 26 to 28 players. To keep the roster at 28, infielder Will Wilson was optioned to Triple-A Columbus.

In the sixth inning the Guardians’ 6-4 loss, Noel pinch-hit and grounded out. In the bottom of the sixth, he introduced himself to Fenway Park’s quirky right field for the first time in his career while replacing C.J. Kayfus.

It is an introduction he will not forget.

Trevor Story, Boston’s leadoff hitter in the bottom of the sixth, sent a drive down the right field line toward the foul pole. The pole is located 302 feet from home plate and is nicknamed Pesky’s Pole after legendary Boston second baseman Johnny Pesky.

Noel sprinted over to the side wall and jumped just in front of the pole. He reached into the crowd, temporarily gloved the ball, only to have it bounce out after he came into contact with a fan. The ball then hit the foul pole behind him.

It was originally ruled a foul ball on the field, but the Red Sox challenged the call. After a review, the call on the field was overturned and Story was credited with a home run to give the Red Sox at 6-3 lead.

Here’s how Noel described the play through interpreter Agustin Rivero, “It’s unclear to me what happened. I don’t know what the ruling was about. I was trying to catch the ball, but I ran into a kid. That’s the only recollection I had. I ran into a kid.”

Noel said he caught the ball, “but then when I hit the kid, I felt the ball go out of my glove.”

He added that he felt fan interference should have been called.

“In those situations, I get a little upset,” said Noel. “Maybe the ruling was that way, but I think it shouldn’t have been a homer. Maybe a double, but not a homer.

“That changed the whole game.”

Trivia answer

Guardians’ starting pitchers wroked at least six innings in six consecutive starts before Monday. It may not sound like a big accomplishment, but it was the longest streak by Cleveland starters since a six-game stretch from Aug. 24-Aug. 30, 2022.
