The Milwaukee Brewers on Monday honored a former police and fire chief who has served Wisconsin for 30 years. Before he took the mound to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, James Small had a surprise meeting with his new dog, Hawk.Hawk comes from Custom Canines, a group that trains service dogs.Small was diagnosed with PTSD.The Brewers and their partner Vortex presented Small with his new partner on the field.”I do a lot of work with the peer support teams in the region, and you know, having a dog like that is going to be helpful. Dogs are really helpful with people in times of distress, and I really look forward to being able to work with my own canine,” Small said. Small now serves as the rural EMS outreach manager for the Wisconsin Office of Rural Health.
