The New York Yankees look to bounce back this afternoon after a 7–1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in Friday’s series opener at Yankee Stadium.
Toronto jumped on Yankees rookie Cam Schlittler early, chasing him after just 1.2 innings and four runs allowed on five hits. The middle part of the Blue Jays’ order delivered, with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and Daulton Varsho combining for nine hits and 5 RBIs.
Veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman dominated for the Blue Jays, holding New York to one run and four hits over eight innings.
The win pushed the Blue Jays’ AL East lead over the Yankees to four games. Boston, struggling without injured rookie Roman Anthony, dropped its second straight and sits 4.5 games back.
Still, both Toronto and New York remain in the top two Wild Card spots, with an edge over the slumping Seattle Mariners, who have lost four straight. But the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals are closing in on Seattle, tightening the Wild Card picture further.
As for today’s game, Luis Gil takes the mound for the Yankees. After a late start to his season due to a lat injury, he’s rebounded from a rocky August 3 debut and has settled into form, typically allowing just one or two runs across five innings. His outings have positioned New York to win, provided the offense produces and the bullpen avoids its frequent collapses.
Chris Bassitt (11–7, 4.10 ERA) gets the start for Toronto. Now in his 11th MLB season, the 36-year-old posted a 3.67 ERA in August despite an 0–2 record.
New York’s lineup has plenty of history against him, including in three games this season. Aaron Judge is batting .286 with two homers in 21 at-bats against Bassitt, while Jasson Dominguez has gone 6-for-9 with a homer.
Predictions
Expect the Yankee bats to rebound today against Bassit, with the leaky bullpen allowing a few runs after another solid Gil start, before New York prevails by a run.
Prediction: Yankees 5, Blue Jays 4
