Rockies Report, Game 142:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: The Rockies managed to bring the tying run to the plate despite falling into a 10-2 hole, but couldn’t complete the comeback, falling 10-8 to the San Diego Padres in front of 43,461 at Coors Field on Saturday night.

San Diego rocketed in front 6-0 in the sixth inning at the expense of rookie starter McCade Brown, who struggled in his third career start and was relieved after just 1 2/3 innings. The Rox got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the second on RBI singles from Brenton Doyle and Warming Bernabel, but fell further behind in the fifth after the Padres rocked reliever Roansy Contreras in his first Rockies appearance.

The recent waiver claim allowed a single before recording a pair of outs, then yielded a walk and two singles before giving way to Jaden Hill, who allowed two quick singles of his own to ensure Contreras absorbed the maximum damage from his 2/3 of an inning of work.

That proved to be all of San Diego’s output for the night.

Hunter Goodman went to work in the sixth inning with his 29th home run of the season, a leadoff shot to bring the Rox within 10-3.

In the seventh, the Rox pummeled Padres reliever Jeremiah Estrada. Mickey Moniak’s RBI single plated one run; Jordan Beck’s 15th homer of the season — a three-run shot — drew the Rox within 10-7.

After an eighth-inning rally fizzled when Yanquiel Fernández hit into a 4-6-3 double play, Moniak got the Rox within 10-8 in the ninth.

But that was as close as they came.

Colorado is 40-102 and is now just one defeat shy of matching a franchise record.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Brown hasn’t gone more than four innings in any of his three major-league starts, but on Saturday, he didn’t make it through the second inning, felled by a disastrous second inning.

He retired Fernando Tatis Jr., Luis Arraez and Manny Machado in 10 pitches to open the game but plunked Ryan O’Hearn with his second pitch of the second inning. After Ramón Laureano singled, a curveball got away from Brown and hit Jackson Merrill to load the bases.

Four pitches later, Brown got the ground ball he needed on a 1-2 sinker to Jake Cronenworth. Only problem was, it hit Brown in the backside. O’Hearn scored and all hands were safe. Two pitches later, Freddy Fermin sliced a Brown slider down the left-field line for two more runs.

Brown struck out Mason McCoy to finally record an out, but then his first-pitch slider to Tatis lingered in the lower half of the strike zone. It landed 441 feet away in the left-center field stands.

The rookie was given a chance to reset, but after a single and a walk bracketed by a fly-ball out, Brown was relieved with an ERA of 12.54 and a WHIP of 2.36.

Brown skipped AAA after pitching 11 games for AA Hartford this season, capping a rapid rise to a year that saw him begin the campaign with High-A Spokane.
