The Pittsburgh Pirates are remembering a local music legend who passed away in 2018 with a memorable tribute.
The late Mac Miller, who was raised in the Point Breeze neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA, will be honored with a bobblehead on July 19. The MLB gave fans a sneak peek of the sports-music crossover in a May 15 post on X. The bobblehead character of Miller is sporting a Pirates baseball jersey with the city’s 412 area code on the front and yin-yang baseball cap. His “Most Dope” knuckle tattoos are even well-represented on the figurine.
The Pittsburgh Pirates posted a tribute to Miller on X, writing “This is for you, Malcolm.” The video showed fans talking about his legacy and how much he meant to them as iconic city locales were shown, including Blue Slide Park and Frick Park Market.
Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen was featured in the clip, sharing his thoughts on Miller. “He talks about [Roberto] Clemente and the Pirates, you know, he’s just a Pittsburgh guy through and through, that’s what made people love him so much,” he said.
The Miller bobblehead giveaway will be a part of the city’s third annual Yinzerpalooza weekend. The first 20,000 baseball fans will be able to acquire the Miller memorabilia on July 19 at the 6:40 p.m. game against the Chicago White Sox, per the Pirates’ website. There will even be a pregame block party ahead of the first pitch, Â promising “live music, drink specials and more!”
Miller died at the age of 26 on Sept. 7, 2018, after he was found unresponsive at his home in Studio City, CA. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office determined in November 2018 that he died from a “mixed drug toxicity” of fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol, per Rolling Stone. Miller is buried at Homewood Cemetery in Pittsburgh.
