The San Francisco Giants lost 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon, which wasn’t ideal. It was still a successful 2-1 series victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, and one that saw them gain ground in the standings, but it certainly could have been better.

With just a few weeks left in the regular season, it seems like a good time to take a peak at the postseason standings, with the Giants are somewhat shockingly relevant in once more.

The Giants were dealt a gift when the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets on Wednesday, dealing New York their fifth consecutive loss. And so with that, the Giants remain just two games behind the Mets for the final Wild Card spot. San Francisco will need to gain three games on New York to surpass them, though, as the Mets hold the tiebreaker.

Here’s what the remaining schedule looks like for the Giants and the Mets:

Giants:
3 vs. Dodgers
3 at Diamondbacks
4 at Dodgers
3 vs. Cardinals
3 vs. Rockies

Mets:
1 at Phillies
3 vs. Rangers
3 vs. Padres
3 vs. Nationals
3 at Cubs
3 at Marlins

Should the Giants leapfrog the Mets, they’ll also have to hold off the surging Cincinnati Reds, who have an identical 74-72 record. The good news is that, while the Giants and Reds split their season series (the first tiebreaker), the Giants comfortably hold the second tiebreaker (intradivision record). Things will get messy if the Giants, Reds, and Mets all finish with matching records, but we’ll cross that bridge of chaos if we get close to it.

There are other ways the Giants can get into the playoffs. They’ll be rooting for the San Diego Padres to beat the Mets next week, but if the Padres fail and the Mets sweep that series, then the Giants might switch their focus to catching up to San Diego. The Padres are currently five games ahead of the Giants, and hold the tiebreaker. So that, while possible, would require a lot of help and another epic collapse from the Padres.

The Giants are also eight games behind the struggling Dodgers. That feels like an insurmountable deficit until you realize that they have seven games left against them. Okay, it still feels insurmountable through that lens, but at least there’s a path, however unlikely.

San Francisco has the day off today as they prepare for the first of those seven games against their rivals, while the Mets will look to avoid a four-game sweep against the Phillies tonight. So that’s a game to watch: go Phillies! The Padres also play tonight, as they host the Colorado Rockies, if you’re looking for more scoreboard watching to do.
