SEATTLE — The hottest team in baseball is the Seattle Mariners, surging into a tie with the Houston Astros for first place in the AL West.
The Mariners have won six straight games, thanks to productive hitting, a lights-out bullpen—and a witch?
Steven Blackburn of Lake Stevens posted on Sept. 5 that he “paid an Etsy witch” to fix the Mariners, who had lost four in a row and six of seven games.
“The idea to lift the curse actually partially came from my best friend,” Blackburn told KOMO News. “She and I have made jokes in the past about using magic or witchcraft or something to fix various things in our lives, and she suggested a few months ago, ‘Hey, why don’t you hire a witch to fix the mariners?'”
Blackburn posted a confirmation that he paid Etsy shop SpellByLuna $15.99 for a spell for the Mariners to “get their act together and start winning baseball games again.”
The Mariners then won the next two games against the Atlanta Braves by a combined score of 28-4. The Mariners posted “shoutout to the Etsy witch” on X after the second straight blowout victory.
The team then arrived home to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals in three games and take the first game of a four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels.

“I’ve been a Mariners fan my entire life,” Blackburn said. “I was at the last game at the Kingdome when I was around 6 months old. So it’s kinda in my blood.”
“It’s been amazing seeing everyone embrace the spell and witch theme,” Blackburn added. “Both from a ‘holy crap this was something that I did’ standpoint, and seeing the absolute love and support directed at me, the team, the witch herself, and the Trevor project, who we started raising funds for because of this.”
The impact of the “Etsy Witch” has been seen off the field as well, with some fans wearing costumes or holding signs referencing witchcraft. Mariners play-by-play announcer Aaron Goldsmith even proclaimed “the Etsy Witch is real” as he called Leo Rivas’ 13th inning walk-off home run Wednesday night.
Blackburn told his X followers to donate to the Trevor Project instead of reimbursing his Etsy purchase.
“The Trevor Project is the leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention nonprofit organization for LGBTQ+ young people,” the nonprofit organization wrote on its website. “We provide information & support to LGBTQ+ young people 24/7, all year round.”
Blackburn said he can’t take full credit for the team’s success.
“The biggest factor for the win streak, in my opinion, is the team playing as hard as they have, and never giving up,” Blackburn said. “I think a lot of what the Etsy witch has brought everyone is just hope and belief.”
The Canadian-based SpellByLuna is an “experienced spell caster, medium, and manifestor,” according to the Etsy storefront. As of Friday, the store is “currently not selling on Etsy.”
“My biggest wish for the team is for them to win the World Series,” Blackburn said. “It’s been my dream for them for as long as I can remember, and I know it would mean so much to so many different people—from the team as a whole, to the fans, former players, and people who just love baseball.”
The Mariners are the only team in the MLB to have never made a World Series appearance. Mariners fans hope that changes this season.
