SP Luis Severino, Athletics vs. Cincinnati Reds, $5,700

I’m a little confused by the price for Severino. He was $6,200 and $6,700 in his last two outings. Now he’s $5,700 — a season low. Since returning from an oblique strain, he’s gone five innings in both contests and put up 14.45 and 16.85 FPTS. He threw 61 pitches in his return, then ramped up to 89 in the most recent outing.

Those games were on the road, and he’s returning to the hitter-friendly park in Sacramento — but still. Whatever. It is what it is. He’s just too cheap for the role.

SP Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers at San Francisco Giants, $7,200

The strikeout rate has dipped to 17.3% for Kershaw, and the fastball is averaging 88.8 mph. But at 37 years old, he’s proving it’s not all about velocity. The guy just knows how to pitch. Through 99 innings, he’s posted a 3.27 ERA and 3.52 FIP. He’s allowed only seven home runs and walked 26 batters. The barrel rate is just 4.3%.

Now, he likely won’t throw more than 80 pitches, but he’s gone at least five innings in each of his last seven starts — and six innings in three of those.

Kershaw faced the Giants at home back in mid-June. He went seven innings, walked one, struck out five, and didn’t allow an earned run on three hits. That translated to 27.35 FPTS. This outing will be in the pitcher-friendly confines of Oracle Park, and against left-handed pitching, the Giants rank fifth in strikeouts, 18th in ISO, and dead last in wOBA.

OF James Outman, Minnesota Twins vs. Arizona Diamondbacks, $2,300

Since being acquired by Minnesota, Outman has received 113 plate appearances. He’s tallied four home runs, 16 runs, eight RBI, and one stolen base. The walk rate is 8%, but the strikeout rate is a whopping 40.7%. The ISO is a respectable .186.

Outman doesn’t hit the ball particularly hard — his average exit velocity is 87.8 mph, and the hard-hit rate is 37.5% — but the barrel rate is a robust 16.1%. He hasn’t been playing every day, as he’s been in the lineup every other game. Well, he sat out Friday’s contest, which means he’ll probably get the nod on Saturday.

He bats ninth in the order, so that stinks, but his ISO against right-handed pitching is .243, and he’s only $2,300. Saturday’s pitcher for Arizona, Ryne Nelson, has done a decent job of limiting the long ball this season, but his HR/9 is 1.46 on the road, and his FIP jumps to 4.62 compared to 2.98 at home.
