The San Diego Padres continue their four-game series against the Colorado Rockies tonight at Petco Park, looking to bounce back after dropping Game 2 last night.
Tanner Gordon, who entered with a 6.60 ERA, silenced the Padres’ bats, holding them to just one run and two hits over six innings with an effective fastball-changeup mix.
Fortunately for San Diego, the Los Angeles Dodgers also lost, so the NL West race remains unchanged with L.A. holding a 2.5-game lead. The San Francisco Giants, however, are creeping closer.
They sit seven games back in the division and could trim the gap to five if they take their series against the Dodgers. After the New York Mets’ loss this afternoon, the Giants also moved into the third Wild Card spot by a mere two-thousandths of a percentage point.
Dylan Cease gets the start for San Diego. He’s 7–11 with a 4.71 ERA, struggling to find consistency compared to his past peak seasons. Still, he’s shown progress in his last two outings against struggling teams, including Colorado. Against the Rockies last week, he allowed one run over five innings with five strikeouts, leaning more on his sweeper than his knuckle curve. The Padres need more stability from him, even if he averages just over five innings per start.
Bradley Blalock takes the mound for Colorado. The 24-year-old righty is 1–4 with an 8.62 ERA, shuttling between the majors and minors this year. After a strong July (1.59 ERA in three starts), he unraveled in August with a 12.21 ERA, giving up 19 runs in 14 innings across three outings.
Prediction
It remains to be seen if Cease has turned the corner, but Blalock looks likely to get shelled again.
Prediction: Padres 8, Rockies 4
