The New York Yankees play the rubber game of their three-game set with the Minnesota Twins tonight.
The Yankees took Game 1 in a wild 10-9 contest, fending off a late Twins rally. New York led 10-1 by the middle of the fourth and looked set for a blowout, especially with rookie Cam Schlittler on the mound. But his start unraveled in the fifth, when he gave up three runs and finished the night with four runs allowed in 4.2 innings, walking five. Control was an issue.
Minnesota chipped away against the bullpen, scoring four in the sixth and one more in the ninth on a Trevor Larnach solo homer off closer David Bednar. The Yankees barely held on, a reminder that no lead is safe with this bullpen.
Despite the scare, New York remains atop the AL Wild Card race with a 1.5-game lead over the Houston Astros and five back of the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East.
The Yankees have a favorable schedule to close the regular season: two series against the Baltimore Orioles with a Chicago White Sox set in between. These are games the Yankees must take to keep distance from other Wild Card contenders.
New York is in good hands tonight with Luis Gil on the mound. Since returning to the rotation in August, he’s been a stabilizer, going 4-1 with a 2.83 ERA. His last outing was as nearly good as it gets: six no-hit innings against the Boston Red Sox.
Taj Bradley gets the start for the Twins. He’s 6-7 with a 4.88 ERA and has struggled with New York before this season, giving up six runs on nine hits back in April, though he limited them to two runs over 5.1 innings in May.
Prediction
Gil is in postseason form and can contain the Twins over six innings. The rest will be up to the bullpen — always a game of Russian roulette. But the Yankees’ offense should deliver enough over the struggling Bradley.
Prediction: Yankees 5, Twins 3
