Ragans returns from injured list, expected to start against Mariners

  • September 18, 2025

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – For the first time since the first week of June, Kansas City Royals left-hander Cole Ragans will pitch for the big league club.

Ragans, who went on the injured list more than three months ago with a left rotator cuff strain, was reinstated from the injured list on Wednesday and is the probable starter for the Royals’ second game against the Seattle Mariners.

He last pitched on June 5 in St. Louis. That night, Ragans pitched 3 innings and allowed 5 earned runs, 3 walks and hit a batter while throwing 78 pitches. It concluded a three-start stretch in which Ragans allowed 4 or more earned runs each time.

Prior to his return, Ragans made two rehab starts in Triple-A with the Omaha Storm Chasers.

This season, Ragans has a 2-3 record and 5.18 ERA in 10 starts. He was Kansas City’s Opening Day starter but has failed to replicate the 11-9 record and 3.14 ERA from the 2024 season.

In a corresponding move, reliever Luinder Avila was optioned back to Omaha.

Ragans isn’t the only Royals starter who has spent a significant portion of the season on the injured list. All-Star Kris Bubic has been on the injured list for the majority of the second half of the season and right-hander Seth Lugo has also spent a chunk of the year on the IL.
