BOSTON — After days spent laying plans involving their young starting pitching options, the Red Sox have settled on how their rotation will shake out for the final stretch of the regular season.

Lefties Kyle Harrison (Saturday) and Connelly Early (Sunday) will follow ace Garrett Crochet in the rotation this weekend in Tampa against the Rays, manager Alex Cora said Wednesday, with rookie Payton Tolle shifting to the bullpen for the rest of the season. It appears that with 11 games left (and an off day Monday), the Red Sox are going with Harrison and Early to finish off a starting five that includes workhorses Crochet, Brayan Bello and Lucas Giolito.

Tolle, who has made three starts since being called up in late August, is the odd man out but the Red Sox are hopeful his high-octane stuff can play in a relief role. Tolle’s new role is the product of the Red Sox deciding to insert Harrison in the rotation for his first start with the club Saturday at Steinbrenner Field.

“We decided it’s going to be Harrison, and there’s no more starts, so we’ll put him in the bullpen and see where it takes us,” said Cora. “I think stuff-wise, he can do it. It’s just also making sure he’s healthy, he can bounce back and all that stuff.”

The Red Sox have been mixing and matching with the back end of their rotation all month with Walker Buehler (demoted to the bullpen, then released), Richard Fitts (injured), Dustin May (injured) and Cooper Criswell (injured) all out of the mix and the quartet of Kutter Crawford, Hunter Dobbins, Tanner Houck and Patrick Sandoval lost for the season. Tolle, who debuted August 29, has made three starts, most recently a two-inning abbreviated outing against the A’s last Thursday. Early pitched well in both of his starts against the A’s on consecutive Tuesdays. Harrison, who was called up late last week after spending the summer at Triple-A, held the A’s to three hits and struck out two batters in three innings in a long relief role Thursday. He’ll be pitching on more than a week of rest when he pitches against the Rays.

The Red Sox went with Harrison in part because he has a good amount of major league experience under his belt, having pitched 182 ⅔ innings over three seasons with the Giants.

“He threw the ball extremely well in Sacramento, so we expect him to do that,” Cora said. “He’s done it at the big league level, too.”

The Red Sox will have Monday off before beginning their final week of the season, which includes three games in Toronto and three at home against Detroit. Giolito, Bello and Crochet would be projected to pitch the three games against the Blue Jays with the Red Sox then needing to pick and choose from their young options on the final weekend. Where they sit in the standings could play a role in those decisions.

For now, though, it’s Early and Harrison as part of the starting five with Tolle, who has struck out 133 batters in 91 ⅔ innings across four levels this season, heading to the bullpen. He’ll be one of six southpaws in a group headlined by closer Aroldis Chapman.

“You can be very aggressive every day with lefties knowing you’re going to have lefties (available) the next day,” said Cora. “The ways the lineups are constructed now, you need lefties in the bullpen.”
