The Colorado Rockies likely won’t tie the mark for the worst record in baseball’s modern era, as they need to win just one of their final 10 exhibitions to pass the Chicago White Sox’s mark of 41 wins from a season ago. Don’t worry everyone, there are still plenty of other historically bad marks in play for the team, and they made history in the wrong way in Wednesday night’s loss.
No, it wasn’t tying the mark for the most losses by an NL team since 1965, this is something different.
LOW SCORES ARE GOOD … IN A DIFFERENT SPORT
The Rockies dipper further into the negative than any team has in the modern era, and for the golf fans out there, it’s not the good kind of negative. The Blake Street Bombers (one day, they’ll be called that again) became the first team to cross the -400 run differential mark in a season. The 1932 Red Sox are next on the list at -345, so it’s almost guaranteed that the Rockies will hold the record once the season is over.

If the Rockies fans who also dabble in golf want to look at this from a glass half full perspective, Tiger Woods finished the 2000 season (arguably the best individual season in the history of professional sports) with a -263 score to par. That means that the Rockies blew the greatest performance of all time out of the water. Right?
MANY LOSSES HAVE NOT BEEN PRETTY
This number has been boosted by a handful of ugly, ugly losses. Six of the club’s 111 losses have been by at least 12 runs, with one of them being a 21-0 shutout against San Diego and another being an 18-0 shutout against Baltimore. The Blue Jays also beat them 20-1, but hey, at least they scored a run that night!
Only 20 of the 111 losses have been by one run, and another 18 have been by two runs. That means that nearly half of their total games played have been losses that weren’t a contest down the stretch. That’s alarmingly bad. They have been consistently getting dominated by every team in the league as they’ve struggled to put up a fight for most of the season.
Longtime pitcher Kyle Freeland recently said that it’s “hard to send a positive message out to fans right now” after he recorded his 16th loss of the season, the most in baseball, on Tuesday. Stats like these continue to flow in, which make the light at the tunnel very hard to see for anyone hoping to see another pennant in this town.
