BOSTON — Instant reactions from the Red Sox’ 5-3 loss to the Athletics at Fenway Park on Thursday:

1) The Red Sox dropped their three-game series to the .471 Athletics, 2-1, to fall to 83-70. Cleveland, meanwhile, finished off a three-game series sweep of Detroit, narrowing Boston’s lead for the final wild-card spot to 1.5 games.

2) Two errors by Trevor Story led to the Athletics extending their lead to 4-2 in the third inning and 5-2 in the seventh. It was Story’s seventh career two-error game and second this season.

Story threw wildly past first baseman Nathaniel Lowe with two outs in the third, allowing Nick Kurtz to score from second base. He threw offline to Lowe in the seventh inning with two outs, allowing Lawrence Butler to score from third base. Lowe had to come off the bag and couldn’t make the tag.

“Obviously a tough game to lose,” Story said. “But on to the next. I think that’s the mindset of our team right now. … We spoiled a chance to get a series win today. And it’s tough to win making two errors that lead to runs. So that’s on me. And I feel like especially in September, that’s the beautiful part about it is that you’re not going to harp on anything for too long, win or lose. So on to the next. That’s our mindset.”

3) Story got one of those runs back in the eighth with a solo homer. He became just the second Red Sox player ever with 25 homers, 30 steals and 90 RBIs in one season, joining Jacoby Ellsbury (2011).

4) Manager Alex Cora pulled starter Brayan Bello after just 70 pitches through four innings. He allowed four runs (three earned), five hits and two walks while striking out three. He allowed three runs in the first inning, including giving up a 397-foot two-run home run to Brent Rooker.

5) Payton Tolle, who the Red Sox announced Wednesday will pitch out of the bullpen for the rest of the season, replaced Bello to start the fifth. He pitched 3 innings and allowed one unearned run, three hits and no walks while striking out four.

6) David Hamilton belted his fifth home run, a 393-foot, 107.9 mph solo blast to right field that cut the deficit to 3-2 in the second inning.

7) The Red Sox will start a three-game series in Tampa Bay on Friday at 7:35 p.m. Ace Garrett Crochet (16-5, 2.63 ERA) will start for Boston opposite righty Drew Rasmussen (10-5, 2.74 ERA).
