Terry Sanford High School’s baseball field will be named after longtime coach Sam Guy.The Cumberland County Schools Board of Education approved the naming in honor of Guy’s 25 years of service.Guy has achieved over 400 career wins and mentored numerous college and MLB players.The field naming coincides with Terry Sanford’s successful playoff run.

Terry Sanford’s baseball field is getting a new name, and cementing the legacy of its winningest coach.

The Bulldogs will play on “Samuel P. Guy III Baseball Field” in honor of longtime baseball coach Sam Guy, with the action approved by the Cumberland County Schools Board of Education at its monthly NextStep Board Actions meeting on Tuesday, May 13.

“In honor of Samuel P. Guy III, a dedicated educator and athletic leader with over 25 years of service in Cumberland County Schools, the Board approved naming the baseball field at Terry Sanford High School the Samuel P. Guy III Baseball Field. Widely respected both in the classroom and on the field, according to school officials, Guy is known for his unwavering mentorship, commitment to academic excellence, and the values he instills in his players. His lasting impact has become a cornerstone of the school’s athletic tradition,” the CCS board said.

Guy, also a former Seventy-First and Jack Britt coach, has propelled the Terry Sanford baseball program since his tenure there started in 2010, including securing his 400th career win against Pine Forest on April 22, and the program has sent numerous Cumberland County athletes into college on scholarship, with alums Austin Warren and DJ Herz going all the way to Major League Baseball rosters.

Currently, Terry Sanford baseball (24-5, 13-1 All American) is on a three-game playoff win streak as it prepares for a fourth-round matchup in the NCHSAA 3A East tournament against (3) Southern Alamance on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in hopes of securing back-to-back trips to the 3A East regional finals.

The Bulldogs have twice reached the NCHSAA Final Four under Guy, in 2018 and ’24. He has a 292-81 record at Terry Sanford, according to stats from maxpreps.com, winning at a 78.3% clip. In conference games, Guy is 168-13, winning 92.8% of his games with more seasons coached than losses. The Bulldogs have won 12 regular-season conference championships and eight league tournament titles under Guy, sweeping both eight times, and they’ve won 24 state playoff games during Guy’s 15-year tenure.

The board also approved naming the concession stand at Terry Sanford for longtime supporter Joe Riddle and his family.
