Diamondbacks right-handed pitcher Corbin Burnes has 10 strikeouts and has allowed only two hits in six innings, and Arizona leads Colorado 5-0 Friday night (May 16) at Chase Field in the opener of a three-game series.

The Diamondbacks have a run-scoring double from Tim Tawa, two runs batted in for Geraldo Perdomo and a sacrifice fly from Eugenio Suarez. Corbin Carroll has two hits, a run and a stolen base.

Burnes ran into some trouble in the top of the fourth, putting the first two Rockies on base via a single and a walk. After two outs, Burnes walked Michael Toglia to load the bases, then struck out Mickey Moniak on three pitches with a curveball to preserve the shutout.

Rockies starter Carson Palmquist’s Major League Baseball debut is done after he pitched four innings.

The Diamondbacks made it 4-0 in the fourth on Gabriel Moreno’s double into the left field corner that scored Randal Grichuk, who had singled to lead off the inning. Grichuck barely beat the throw home with a headfirst slide at the plate.

Arizona added a fifth run on Perdomo’s sacrifice fly to left field, driving in Moreno.

Gabi Moreno PULLS, that’s right pulls a hard hit double instead of hitting the ball to “Gabi-Lane”

But that slide by Randal Grichuk, perfection. Ball beats him to the plate but gets in their just before the tag. Love it. Keep pilling on snakes pic.twitter.com/QF5SeR3gvq

Roster moves include trade, starting pitcher to IR

The Arizona Diamondbacks moved two struggling lefties off their roster on Friday, May 16, placing starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation and optioning reliever Joe Mantiply to Triple-A Reno.

Rodriguez endured a fourth consecutive poor outing on Wednesday, May 14, in San Francisco, giving up four runs in four innings. Over those four starts, he has allowed 24 runs (21 earned) in 16 innings.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said he was made aware of Rodriguez dealing with fatigue after the team’s May 14 game at San Francisco, in which Rodriguez pitched. Imaging was done on Rodriguez, and only natural inflammation was revealed, Lovullo said.

“Through the course of the past couple of days, we determined it was best to put him on the IL, build up some of that strength and get him back out there as soon as possible,” Lovullo said.

“I’ve known ‘E-Rod’ since he was 19 or 20 years old, he’s just a very tough player. He’s a grinder. It takes a lot for him to speak up. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d been feeling this for a little while.”

The move most likely means right-hander Ryne Nelson will move into the starting rotation.

Mantiply returns to Reno after making only two appearances following his most recent call-up. He gave up four runs in 2 1/3 innings in those two outings. He has given up 17 runs in 9 2/3 innings in two separate stints in the majors this season.

“It’s a work in progress. Sometimes things get away from you, you make some mistakes and this is what happens when you’re in this situation,” Lovullo said. “We have a lot of confidence in Joe that he’s going to go back down to Reno and find his way back here.”

The Diamondbacks recalled right-hander Christian Montes de Oca, who had a 2.37 ERA in 19 appearances in Reno this season, and right-hander Scott McGough, who has spent most of the year in Reno except for a brief stint in the majors earlier this month, in which he logged two scoreless innings in an outing against the Phillies in Philadelphia.

Ketel Marte back in DBacks’ lineup

Second baseman Ketel Marte is back in the Diamondbacks starting lineup for Friday, May 16, just as he and Lovullo said he would be after he left the game early in San Francisco two days earlier.

Marte is leading off and playing second base against Rockies lefty Carson Palmquist.

“Marte is in a very, very, very good spot,” Lovullo said of Marte’s health.

Marte blasted a pair of home runs on Wednesday, May 14, at Oracle Park but exited the game for a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh inning after dealing with body stiffness.

Lovullo said Marte had to talk his way into the lineup that day and that he was removed for precautionary reasons. Marte mentioned the chilly wind blowing at his back as taking a toll on him during the first two games of the series there.

Marte believes he can benefit from getting consistent days off.

“I’m ready to play every day,” he said on May 14, “but I think having one day off a week is going to do well for my body.”

Justin Martinez has increased velocity

Right-handed pitcher Justin Martinez was eligible to come off the 15-day injured list on May 16, but did not.

Still, Lovullo said Martinez threw in a live setting and “touched 99” mph with his pitches. When he went on IR, his fastball velocity was down in the mid-90s, though it has touched 100 mph in the past.

“The velo(city) is back and we’re anticipating that if he gets into a game, a little more competition mindset, that he’s going to be exactly where he was with the velo,” Lovullo said.

Martinez is nearing a return.

Reliever traded to New York Mets for cash

The Diamondbacks sent left-handed reliever Jose Castillo to the New York Mets late May 15 in exchange for cash considerations.

Castillo pitched in five games for the Diamondbacks this season with uneven results. He allowed eight runs on 10 hits (three home runs) in 6 1/3 innings (11.37 ERA).

Castillo appeared in 40 games for the San Diego Padres from 2018-23.

He was hit hard in his most recent appearance, May 11 at Los Angeles, surrendering three runs on six hits over two innings in an 8-1 loss to the Dodgers.

The Diamondbacks also signed free-agent right-handed reliever Jonatan Bernal to a minor league contract on May 16. Through four minor league seasons, Bernal, 22, is 5-18 in 43 starts with an ERA of 4.40 and 181 strikeouts, 62 walks over 229 1/3 innings.

Coming up

Saturday, May 17: At Chase Field, 5:10 p.m., Diamondbacks RHP Zac Gallen (3-5, 4.59) vs. Rockies RHP German Marquez (1-6, 8.27).

Sunday, May 18: At Chase Field, 1:10 p.m., Diamondbacks RHP Merrill Kelly (4-2, 3.71) vs. Rockies RHP Chase Dollander (2-4, 6.88).

Monday, May 19: At Los Angeles, 7:10 p.m., Diamondbacks RHP Brandon Pfaadt (6-3, 3.73) vs. Dodgers RHP Landon Knack (2-1, 5.89).

The Rockies are an incredible 7-36 through their first 43 games, meaning they are beyond the quarter pole of the season and on pace for a mind-boggling 136 losses. They recently fired manager Bud Black and replaced him with third base coach Warren Schaeffer. They have scored the second-fewest runs in the majors – which is amazing for a team that plays its home games at Coors Field – and entering May 15 had allowed 31 more runs than the next-closest team. They own a 5.73 ERA. Their offense is hitting .216 with a league-leading 418 strikeouts. C Hunter Goodman is swinging the bat well, hitting .291/.345/.483. OF Jordan Beck has also been productive, with a .257/.322/.514 line. No one who has started a game for the Rockies has an ERA better than RHP Ryan Feltner’s 4.75. Feltner is on the injured list with back spasms.
