The Phillies scored four runs on just one hit in the seventh inning and Bryce Harper collected career RBIs 1,000 and 1,001 in a come from behind 8-4 win against the Pirates in the opener of MLB Rivalry Weekend. Philadelphia rode four walks and a hit-by-pitch in the seventh to take the lead before adding on in the eighth. They finished with 8 walks drawn on the night. The late rally earned Ranger Suárez a win after he exited after seven strong innings with 6 strikeouts.

Any way we can get’em

The Phillies entered the seventh inning trailing 3-1 after Suárez allowed his only blemish on a three-run homer to Alexander Canario in the sixth. Max Kepler led off the seventh as a pinch hitter against Pirates reliever Colin Holderman. Kepler worked an eight pitch at-bat before flying out to left. Next, Johan Rojas worked an eight pitch at-bat that ended with a walk, the first of two walks on the night for Rojas.

Trea Turner followed that up with a bloop single to left that went in and out of the glove of Tommy Pham to put runners on first and second with one out. That would knock Holderman out of the game, as the Pirates elected to bring in lefty Ryan Borucki to face Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber.

That move backfired, as Harper worked a walk after falling behind 0-2 in the count to load the bases. Harper appeared to go around on a check swing on ball four, but third base umpire John Libka ruled it a no swing on appeal and quickly ejected Pittsburgh manager Don Kelly who argued the call.

Schwarber then followed Harper with a walk of his own, knocking a run in and cutting the deficit to 3-2. Nick Castellanos quickly fell behind 0-2, but he was then hit by a sweeper on the foot, bringing in the tying run. That would knock Borucki out of the game, as the Pirates brought in their third pitcher of the inning, this time it was righty Tanner Rainey.

But he didn’t fare much better, as J.T. Realmuto joined in on the walk parade, bringing in the go-ahead run and giving the Phillies a 4-3 lead. Alec Bohm followed up with a sac fly before Edmundo Sosa grounded out to finally end the inning. But when it was all said and done, the Phillies scored 4 runs on just one hit thanks to four walks and a hit by pitch.

Mr. 1,000

Earlier in the game, Bryce Harper collected his 1,000th RBI with a two-out, two-strike bloop single to left in the fifth for the first run of the game. Harper becomes just the eighth active player to reach 1,000 career RBIs, joining Giancarlo Stanton, Paul Goldschmidt, Freddie Freeman, Nolan Arenado, Manny Machado, Carlos Santana, and Andrew McCutchen.

Mr. 1,001

But Harper wasn’t done there, as he added another RBI with a single to the right side to score Turner in the eighth to push the lead to 7-3.

That was after Turner drove in Rojas with a triple down the line to right. Rojas scored from first after drawing his second walk on just four pitches.

Schwarber followed with a single and Harper would later score on an RBI groundout from Castellanos to plate the Phillies eighth run of the game.

One bump in the road

Suárez pitched well on the night, finishing 7 innings on 98 pitched while allowing 3 runs on six hits and a walk with five punchouts. His only mistake was a 1-2 fastball to Canario that was left up and away that Canario drove out to right field for a three-run homer.

Jordan Romano fired a scoreless eighth inning on 9 pitches thanks to a double play, while Daniel Robert gave up a hit and three walks in the ninth to allow the tying run to come to the plate. But José Alvarado was able to come in and quickly slam the door and secure the win.

Tomorrow’s matchup

Zack Wheeler (4-1, 2.95) takes the mound for the Phillies against Carmen Mlodzinski (1-3, 5.20) for the Pirates. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
