After what was a difficult two months with the Tigers, Charlie Morton’s time with Detroit ended on September 21. The Tigers designated him for assignment before their final regular-season game at home and released him shortly thereafter.
Morton released by Tigers
The Tigers released Charlie Morton on September 21, cutting loose the 41-year-old with one week left before the regular season.
Morton signed with the Orioles on a one-year deal back in January. Despite a 5.42 ERA, Morton’s numbers weren’t that bad in Baltimore. His lofty ERA was buoyed by a slog early on in the year. But between May and June, Morton struck out 51 over 45.1 IP and walked just 13. He posted a 3.38 ERA in that span.
Detroit acquired him to fill out their rotation in late July. The results, though, were far from spectacular.
Morton conceded seven home runs and 23 walks over 39.1 IP. Among pitchers with 25+ IP from August 1 through September 20, Morton had the fourth-highest BB/9 (5.3). Only Spencer Arrighetti, Luis Gil, and Seth Lugo had higher rates.
Detroit selected Tanner Rainey from Triple-A Toledo to replace Morton.
D-Backs select Pope
The Diamondbacks selected the contract of Austin Pope on September 21 from Reno (AAA). Pope was a 15th-round pick by Arizona from Fairfield University back in 2019.
Pope struck out 34 over 29.1 IP with Reno this season. His fastball doesn’t have big velocity, topping out in the mid-90s with 14” IVB. However, the fastball does have more cut than normal. Additionally, he showcased two breaking balls with depth that netted him swings-and-misses.

Pope posted a 44.8% Whiff% on the slider and a 38% Whiff% on the curveball.
Other transactions
Catcher Ali Sanchez was DFA’d by the Red Sox on September 21. Additionally, Chris Devenski (Mets) and Jake Woodford (Diamondbacks) were also DFA’d.
The Cubs released Nate Pearson.
