DETROIT — The final chapter of Charlie Morton’s 18-season MLB career may have a happy ending after all.

Morton, 41, has agreed to a deal with the Atlanta Braves for the final days of the 2025 season.

The veteran right-hander was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Sunday after he was roughed up in a 10-1 loss to the Braves on Friday night at Comerica Park.

It looked like his career might end amid boos and a performance he called “heartbreaking.

Now Morton will get a chance to finish out the season and potentially retire as a member of the Braves, the team that originally drafted him out of high school back in 2002.

Morton made his MLB debut with Atlanta in 2008 and returned for a second stint from 2021-24, playing a key role in their 2021 World Series championship rotation.

After leaving the Braves, Morton signed a one-year, $15 million deal with Baltimore before this season. He got off to a miserable start, going 0-6 with a 10.36 ERA in his first six outings and losing his rotation spot before the end of April.

But the Orioles stuck with him, and he rebounded after spending a month in the bullpen. After rejoining the rotation on May 26, he went 7-1 with a 3.88 ERA (4.12 FIP) in 60 1/3 innings.

The Tigers sent minor-league left-hander Micah Ashman to the Orioles to acquire Morton on July 31.

In nine starts with the Tigers, Morton was 2-3 with a 7.09 ERA in 39 1/3 innings with 47 strikeouts and 23 walks.
