Auburn is in great standing to host an NCAA regional with two weeks to go in the regular season.
Ahead of last weekend’s series at Tennessee, the Auburn Tigers were projected to host a regional in D1Baseball’s Field of 64 projections as the No. 14 overall seed. Now, the Tigers are in a prime position to host both a regional and a super regional in the publication’s updated outlook.
D1Baseball has boosted the Tigers’ postseason stock in its most recent update released Tuesday, moving Auburn from No. 14 to No. 6 in their Field of 64 projections, which would be good enough to earn a hosting bid for both regionals and super regionals. Southern Miss, Stetson, and Bryant are projected to travel to Auburn for the regionals, and the winner would be paired with Coastal Carolina, which is this week’s No. 11 seed. Coastal would host NC State, Florida, and High Point as part of their regional, according to D1Baseball. D1Baseball projects the SEC to send 14 teams to the postseason, with seven in position to host a regional.
Auburn has moved one place in the RPI since Sunday’s finale at Tennessee to No. 3, trailing just Georgia and Texas for the top spot. The Tigers are one of three teams with at least 13 wins against quad-1 competition, joining Texas and Vanderbilt. Auburn is also 6-1 against quad-3 competition, which is where South Carolina resides ahead of this weekend’s series at Plainsman Park.
Auburn’s series with South Carolina begins Thursday at 6 p.m. CT.
