EUGENE, Ore. — Cal Poly suffered a narrow 3-2 loss to Arizona in the opening game of the Eugene Regional of the 2025 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, Friday at PK Park. Cal Poly compiled 10 hits in the game but had trouble advancing runners once they got on base. Arizona on the other hand had only two hits for three runs.
The Mustangs drop to 41-18 overall and will play an elimination game on Saturday, May 31 at noon PT against the loser of Oregon and Utah Valley. The Wildcats improve to 40-18 overall on the season and will await the winner of the Ducks-Wolverines game.
Cal Poly starter Griffin Naess (7-3) took the loss but had a stellar outing, giving up only two hits for three runs in 7.0 innings of work. The Mustang ace went three-up-three-down in four of the seven innings. Reliever Jaccob Torres pitched a perfect eighth inning.
Arizona scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Naess gave up a walk, RBI triple and a 2-run home run to the Wildcats. Cal Poly took a run back in the top of the sixth. Casey Murray Jr. led the inning off with a double and came home on a Dylan Kordic RBI hit.
Cal Poly’s Cam Hoiland made it a one-run game, 3-2, in the top of the eighth with a solo shot over the left field wall.
Murray Jr., Hoiland and Dante Vachini each had multi-hit games, all going 2-for-4 from the plate.
