Freddy Peralta speaks about shutout performance vs Cubs on Aug. 18
Freddy Peralta allowed just one hit over six innings against the Cubs, and the Brewers kept rolling with a 7-0 win Aug. 18 at Wrigley Field.
We asked readers how they felt about a potential playoff battle between the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs and if they wanted to see Chicago at any point in the 2025 postseason.
Turns out they’re almost evenly split. When asked if they wanted to see the Cubs, we had exactly one more response of “no” (50.1%) than “yes.”
The Brewers, who could clinch the No. 1 overall seed in the postseason as early as Sept. 25, will secure a franchise record for single-season wins and the best record in baseball with one more victory. If the season ended today, they’d be on track to face the Cubs or the San Diego Padres in the National League Division Series.
If the Cubs win the best-of-three battle in the wild-card round, running Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, they would face Milwaukee in the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.
Here’s what readers said about why they chose yes or no:
Voters who don’t want to Brewers to play the Cubs”Don’t ever want the Cubs to win at anything. Don’t want their fans near Milwaukee.” (Jim, Milwaukee)”It would be tough to take if we lost to them.” (Steve, New Berlin)”I don’t want (Craig) Counsell and their fans here.” (Jeanne, Milwaukee)”Would hate losing to them without Woody.” (Rick, Colorado)”They will be one of the toughest outs in the postseason.” (Chris, Waukesha)”Their season would be over, which makes me happier, as well as Cubs fans having to sell the tickets they bought to true Brewers fans.” (Dan, Iola)”Can’t bear losing to the Cubs in the playoffs after the greatest regular season in Brewers history.” (Matt, Wauwatosa)”Too many Cubs fans will pay whatever it takes to take over the stadium, as always.” (Kevin, Green Bay)”I don’t want to listen to them for the rest of my life.” (Bill, Hayward)”We don’t need the added drama that series would bring with it.” (Dustin, Germantown)”In 2018, when the Rockies beat the Cubs in the wild-card game, it cut ticket prices in half for the NLDS. It meant I could attend NLDS Game 1 and it’s my favorite baseball game I’ve ever been to. So I like a scenario where that doesn’t price out a big chunk of the fan base.” (Blake, Thiensville)”Brewers ‘fans’ selling tickets to Cubs fans will make for a non-homefield advantage.” (Brad, De Pere)Voters who want the Brewers to play the Cubs”I have a lot of friends who are Cubs fans (I used to be one). Beating the Cubs would energize the Brewers and their fans and give them the confidence needed to get to and win the World Series. (Tim, Appleton)”It’s our most traditional rival. Any time we get a chance to beat a Chicago team, do it. Beating the Cubs and Counsell would be too good to pass up.” (Dave, East Troy)”I would love to see Counsell get thumped back home in Milwaukee.” (Jason, Cedar Falls, Iowa)”The Cubs aren’t as dangerous as the Padres, and they have been slumping along with other clubs that chase OPS instead of OBP like the Brewers. I predict that the Brewers will finish ahead of the Cubs every year of Craig Counsell’s contract.” (Gary, West Allis)”Who cares? The Brewers are the better club, hands down, and proved it all year.” (Dennis, Oconomowoc)”To beat a Chicago team and to knock Craig Counsell out of the playoffs.” (Neal, Diamondhead, Mississippi)”I think we match up with them well, and they’ve been playing poorly, despite the season-series results. Also, lower chance of West Coast late games.” (Mike, Menomonee Falls)”The rivalry will become greater than it already is.” (Charles, New Berlin)”Because the Brewers are going to lose in NLDS and it would be easier processing loss to a team other than Cubs.” (Michael, Milwaukee)”Just cuz it’s the Cubs. L.” (John, Nashville)”Does the theater of sport get any better? Counsell, who probably will be staying at his home in Whitefish Bay during the series, against his old team. Of course, for Brewers fans, it’s only great if we win. Cubs fans would be even more insufferable if it went the other way.” (Nathan, Shorewood)”Bring them on.” (Scott, Park City, Utah)
