Chicago White Sox pitcher Tyler Gilbert was inspected by MLB umpires while pitching against the New York Yankees. The MLB crew was suspicious of Gilbert using a foreign substance and was forced to pause the game to have their routine check. It’s common for umpires to check pitchers in case of suspicion. Several pitchers were ejected previously for using a foreign substance.

The incident occurred at the bottom of the fifth inning when Gilbert stepped up as a relief pitcher. The White Sox were leading with the Yankees trailing 3-1, and Gilbert was given a new glove after umpires had completed their checks.

“Umpires removed the glove of White Sox pitcher Tyler Gilbert as he entered the game and gave the glove to the Yankees dugout. Gilbert was given a new glove and remained in the game.”

MLB crew chief Dan Bellino was the one who identified a suspicious spot inside Gilbert’s glove. However, they replaced the glove and allowed him to stay in the game.

The league and its crew found no foreign substance or sticky stuff on Gilbert’s glove. Hence, they were unable to eject Gilbert from the game. As per the MLB rules, the league must be able to prove if the substance is illegal.

In Tyler Gilbert’s case, there was no proof of any sticky substance on his hand or body. Bellino admitted that he was unable to determine if there was any sticky substance on Gilbert’s glove. Several MLB analysts were unhappy about the league’s decision to call out Gilbert.

It’s been a disastrous season for the Chicago White Sox. The franchise will finish at the bottom of the AL Central, and they can only hope to have a better season next year. Tyler Gilbert and his teammates have struggled immensely.

Manager Will Venable has been standing up for his team throughout this season. After the team’s historically bad season last year, Venable has shown some progress this year. Yet, the franchise will finish with the second-worst record in the league.
