Braves look to end season strong against Pirates

  • September 26, 2025

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The Atlanta Braves open their final series of the season on Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Truist Park.

It marks the final game broadcast live on Gray Media in 2025, and could also mark the end for a couple of distinguished careers in the Braves organization.

It’s widely speculated that this could be the final series in a Braves uniform for manager Brian Snitker, who’s held various roles in the Braves organization across 49 seasons. He’s held the role of manager since 2017 and led the team to seven straight postseason appearances and a World Series title in 2021.

The Braves (75-84) were eliminated from postseason contention and will not be playing in October for the first time since 2017. The Pirates (69-90) did their best to spoil the Cincinnati Reds’ postseason chances this week – taking two of three – but their season is once again a wash as their postseason drought continues.

Braves-Pirates probable pitchers

Friday, 7:15 p.m. – LHP Joey Wentz (5-6, 5.46 ERA) vs. RHP Mitch Keller (6-15, 4.22 ERA)

Saturday, 7:15 p.m. – RHP Spencer Strider (7-13, 4.45 ERA) vs. RHP Bubba Chandler (3-1, 4.56 ERA)

Sunday, 3:15 p.m. – RHP Charlie Morton (9-11, 5.89 ERA) vs. RHP Johan Oviedo (2-0, 3.57 ERA)

The 41-year-old Morton will likely make the final start of his career on Sunday. Southpaw Chris Sale was originally scheduled to start, but will instead pitch in bulk relief to let Morton soak it all in.

Morton has pitched to the tune of a 5.89 ERA in 32 games with both the Tigers and the Baltimore Orioles this season. He pitched with the Braves in 2008 and from 2021-24, playing a key part in the team’s 2021 championship.

Southpaw Joey Wentz takes the mound on Friday, while right-hander Spencer Strider will conclude his rocky campaign on Saturday.
