MIAMI — When it comes to who will occupy the mound for the Mets in their final series of the season, Carlos Mendoza is taking each game as it comes.

Mendoza announced on Friday afternoon that Clay Holmes would draw the start for the Mets for Saturday’s game against the Marlins at loanDepot park. Beyond that, much is still up in the air.

“We’re not thinking about Sunday. We gotta take care of business today and then we gotta take care of business tomorrow and see where we’re at,” Mendoza said. “We’re not planning ahead. This is literally one day at a time here. The one thing we know is that Clay is going to start tomorrow and then we’ll see who’s available.”

Holmes and Sean Manaea, who had piggybacked appearances together twice in September, ended up appearing in relief over an inning apiece after Jonah Tong struggled against the Cubs on Thursday night.

Mendoza said the Mets elected to go with Holmes for Saturday’s outing after he recovered a little bit stronger after tossing 14 pitches in an inning of work. Manaea deployed 16 pitches in his lone inning, allowing two earned runs on two hits with a strikeout.

When asked if Manaea was an option to start in Sunday’s season finale, Mendoza left it up in the air.

“We gotta wait and see,” Mendoza said. “We gotta get through today, we gotta get through tomorrow and then it’s day-to-day basically.”

The Mets manager did say that David Peterson would be available out of the bullpen starting on Saturday after he threw 41 pitches in his last outing, getting an early hook after giving up five earned runs in 1⅓ innings.

“We’ll get through today and we’ll see if we need him out of the bullpen tomorrow, if we need him to start the next day,” Mendoza said. “It’s literally one day at a time.”
