The Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox continue their final season series this afternoon at Fenway.
Boston locked in a postseason berth with last night’s walk-off win in the opener, while Detroit remains in a tight race. The Tigers are tied with the Cleveland Guardians atop the AL Central but lose the tiebreaker, which currently leaves them holding the third AL Wild Card spot. The Houston Astros, just one game back, add even more pressure.
To seal a postseason spot, the Tigers will need to either beat the Red Sox today to clinch or for the Astros to lose to the Los Angeles Angels tonight.
The pitching matchup leans toward Boston. Keider Montero starts for the Tigers, bringing a 5–3 record and 4.48 ERA. He’s been used in multiple roles this season and struggled in his last outing, giving up three runs on two homers in three innings with four walks.
Rookie left-hander Connelly Early gets the ball for Boston. He’s impressed with a 1.88 ERA in three starts, though he showed some vulnerability against the Tampa Bay Rays last time out, giving up two runs in four innings.
The Tigers are a step above in terms of offense. So this’ll be a good high-leverage test for Early just ahead of the postseason.
The Red Sox are resting Trevor Story, Alex Bregman, Romy Gonzalez, and Jarren Duran today.
Prediction
The Red Sox hold the edge thanks to steadier pitching and a sharp bullpen. But they are resting some of their bigger bats. While Detroit’s lineup has pop, Montero’s inconsistency on the mound makes this a tough matchup in Fenway.
Prediction: Red Sox 3, Tigers 2
