The Texas Rangers will have a new manager in the dugout next season.

It remains unclear who will work alongside them.

Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young said Monday night that he “can’t comment as to what the future holds” for the coaching staff after the club announced that it and manager Bruce Bochy had mutually agreed to end his tenure after three seasons.

“I can’t answer that without knowing who the next manager is going to be and what he will need to be set up for success,” Young said. “I can say I have great admiration and respect for our coaching staff.”

Young confirmed that no coaches have been dismissed or notified that they will not return. The Rangers retained the large majority of Bochy’s staff in each of his three seasons with the team. The three exceptions were associate manager Will Venable (who left to manage the Chicago White Sox last offseason after two seasons with the Rangers), hitting coach Tim Hyers (who left to coach the Atlanta Braves last offseason after two years with the organization) and offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker (who was dismissed in May after three-and-half seasons with the organization).

Third base coach Tony Beasley, first base coach Corey Ragsdale, catching coach Bobby Wilson, hitting coach Seth Conner, quality control coach Brett Hayes and bullpen coach Jordan Tiegs were each either on staff or in the organization prior to Bochy’s tenure. Young said that the team’s struggles this last season were “no fault of our coaching staff” and that each coach is in “great standing” with the organization.

Bench coach Luis Urueta worked under Rangers special advisor Skip Schumaker from 2023-24 with the Miami Marlins. The Rangers hired Schumaker this past winter after the Marlins fired him and Young acknowledged Monday that the former National League Manager of the Year “will be a candidate” to replace Bochy.

Pitching coach Mike Maddux, who oversaw the league’s best staff, returned for his second stint with the club when Bochy was hired three years ago. He, Tiegs and assistant pitching coach Dave Bush (who has in a hybrid front office/on-field role) coached a rotation that led baseball with a 3.41 ERA and a malleable and pieced-together bullpen that yielded a 3.62 ERA without an experienced closer on the roster.

This season’s story, though, was an inconsistent and lackluster offense that ultimately kept the team from the playoffs. The Rangers had the fifth-worst OPS in baseball (.683), scored the ninth-fewest runs (684) and failed to live up to their expectations as a lineup that could slug. That’s what led to the midseason dismissal of Ecker and the hire of former All-Star second baseman Bret Boone.

Boone, who oversaw the hitters alongside coach Justin Viele and Conner for much of the season, said that Bochy was “one guy to get back on the field for the first time in a long time.” His contract ran through this season.

“The reality is, when we don’t reach our goals as a team, we all collectively fall short,” Young said. “That’s me, that’s Boch, that’s the coaching staff, that’s the players. We all have accountability. There’s no one person responsible for an underperforming season.”
