NY Mets pay tribute to Jacob deGrom before he returns to Citi Field mound
As Jacob deGrom made his first start back at Citi Field since leaving the Mets, the club played a video tribute on Sept. 12, 2025.
MIAMI — The Mets can no longer afford another slip-up.
In Friday’s series opener against the Marlins, one ill-fated six-run inning was enough for the Marlins to take down the Mets in a 6-2 result. The defeat cost the Mets their hold on the final National League Wild Card spot, as the Reds moved into a tie and took control based on their tiebreaker with two games left.
During the game, Brett Baty had to exit after tweaking his oblique in the first inning. He remained out of the lineup for Saturday’s action, with Ronny Mauricio penciled in at third base.
Carlos Mendoza said that Baty would be placed on the injured list with his oblique injury and undergo an MRI.
With the Mets fighting for their playoff lives, it will be all hands on deck in their pitching staff. Clay Holmes will draw the start after coming out of the bullpen for one inning on Wednesday against the Cubs.
Holmes, who is 11-8 with a 3.66 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 32 appearances, figures to have a short leash. Sean Manaea and David Peterson are both likely available out of the bullpen.
For the Marlins, Eury Perez will be making the start. He enters with a 7-5 record, 4.20 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. The Mets were able to tag the 22-year-old right-hander last month, running him after â…” inning after he gave up five earned runs on three hits, including two home runs, and two walks.
