Each major league ballpark has “fan rules,” including Wrigley Field in Chicago, where this popular game-time activity is not allowed.

The Chicago Cubs Fans Have Banned The Wave At Wrigley Field

The Chicago Cubs are taking on the San Diego Padres in the playoffs for the first time since 1984, and the thought of this series has started to bring me back some bad memories. I’m hoping for a much better outcome.

That 1984 Chicago team is one of my favorites of all time. Unfortunately, the Padres knocked off the Cubbies that year. I was completely heartbroken. The one thing that really sticks out in my memory is how annoying the San Diego fans were, especially when they were doing “the wave.”

If you’ve ever wondered why there are never fans doing ” the wave” at Wrigley Field, it’s because of that series. Cubs fans are still devastated, even after all these years, and would never allow it. Give it a try and see how fast the crowd will turn on you.

That celebratory movement known as “The Wave” has been duplicated across the sports world over the years, but it’s a rare sight indeed to see it at Wrigley Field, and the reason why has plenty to do with those Padres.

It was during those three games that Cubs fans, and baseball fans in general, were exposed to San Diego fans doing “The Wave” at every given opportunity, and the image became associated with the downfall of the Cubs, who lost the final three games of the series by a combined score of 20-9 and missed out on a trip to the World Series.

Since then, fans who come to Wrigley Field in all likelihood have noticed that “The Wave” rarely occurs at the Friendly Confines, and when fans try to start it, they are typically met with derisive boos or even shouted insults.
