The Dodgers needed to make a statement to begin their postseason run, and that they did emphatically with a 10-5 romp of the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday.
There was no shortage of power on display for the Dodgers as they clobbered five home run against Reds pitching, including a pair of home runs from both Shohei Ohtani and Teoscar Hernández. Ohtani became the first Dodger with multiple leadoff home runs in postseason history, as he sent a 100 mile per hour fastball from Hunter Greene careening just over the right field wall. Ohtani noted that the pitch from Greene was difficult to hit, but he knew how to react accordingly, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.
“It was a really hard pitch to hit, but I felt like I reacted pretty well,” Ohtani said through interpreter Will Ireton.
Dave Roberts amplified that moments like those that transpired on Tuesday are key factors as to why Ohtani decided to sign with the Dodgers, per Sonja Chen of MLB.com.
“His focus gets more keen and the at-bat quality is better,” manager Dave Roberts said. “That’s the reason why he signed to be with this ballclub, this organization, to play in games like this to showcase his otherworldly talent.”
Teoscar Hernández added to the fun against Greene with a three-run home run in the third inning that pushed the Dodger lead to four before going opposite field against Connor Phillips two innings later.
The Dodgers offense showed no shortage of power on Tuesday, but Hernández remarked on the bullpen’s putrid performance that put the Dodgers’ lead in jeopardy, per Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times.
“Those are things that are gonna happen. Those moments in the game are going to come,” Hernández said. “You just have to keep moving forward. … Every victory counts.”
Speaking of the bullpen, it took three pitchers, 59 pitches and 30 minutes to bring an end to the top of the eighth inning, as the Dodgers watched their lead shrink from eight to five with the threat of the Reds shrinking the lead to just a run on one swing of the bat.
“Alex wasn’t sharp tonight. And obviously Henriquez didn’t have any command,” Roberts said. “You follow up in a 10-2 ball game with Edgardo in a lane that I feel very confident in, and he just wasn’t good tonight.”
