MILWAUKEE (WLUK) — Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras thinks there’s no better team in the MLB than the Brew Crew.
He doubled down on that belief in a letter released Thursday in The Players’ Tribute that’s titled “No One Better Than Us.”
The article is an emotional tribute to the city of Milwaukee and Brewers fans everywhere, as the team turns the page on their magical regular-season run and gets ready to begin their playoff journey.
“OUR YEAR. I believe it. Something special for my @Brewers Family,” Contreras wrote in a social media post linking to the article.
In the letter, Contreras recounts how he felt when he was traded to the Brewers by the Atlanta Braves three years ago, and how he has come to love the city he calls home, despite his initial anger about the trade.
“It’s an amazing place. The organization, the fans, it’s such a great baseball city. Funny how it changes. Now if I think about that trade, I got lucky,” he wrote.
Contreras recalled the ups and downs of his first two seasons in Milwaukee, the departure of Craig Counsell as manager and the death of legendary Brewers sportscaster Bob Uecker.
In the playoffs, we knew it’s going to be the last for Bob before he passed. He told us he didn’t have much left. So we wanted to win it for him really bad — 54 years with the Brewers, he never got a ring. And when we lost to the Mets, out in the first round, what can you say? It’s heartbreaking. We had this goal and couldn’t achieve it.
Contreras concluded the letter by reflecting on the historic achievements of this year’s Brewers squad and what it has meant to him to be a part of it.
“This team, it’s so special. And for the first time since I won a ring, I’m really feeling that feeling again,” he said. “I hope I spend my whole career here — and I hope to be on the first World Series winner in Brewers history.”
The Brewers host the Chicago Cubs at American Family Field Saturday for the first game in the best-of-five National League Division Series.
