The Boston Red Sox season came to an end Thursday night by way of a 4-0 loss to their archrivals, the New York Yankees, in Game 3 of the American League Wild Card series. Rookie pitcher Connelly Early, 23, made his postseason debut for Boston, while 24-year-old Cam Schlitter, a native of Walpole, Massachusetts, started for New York.Early struck out the first batter he faced, Trent Grisham.He looked comfortable in the second with a runner in scoring position, striking out Jazz Chisholm on a sinker to end the inning.In the fourth inning, Boston’s chances went south. Rookie pitcher Connelly Early, 23, made his postseason debut for Boston, while 24-year-old Cam Schlitter, a native of Walpole, Massachusetts, started for New York.

Early struck out the first batter he faced, Trent Grisham.

He looked comfortable in the second with a runner in scoring position, striking out Jazz Chisholm on a sinker to end the inning.

In the fourth inning, Boston’s chances went south. Cody Bellinger hit a weak fly ball to right field that dropped between three Red Sox players, allowing Bellinger to take second with no outs.

With two runners on, Amed Rosario singled past Trevor Story, Bellinger scores, giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead.

Later in the inning, a fielding error by Red Sox first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, extending New York’s lead to 4-0.

Boston led Major League Baseball in errors during the regular season.

Yankees starting pitcher Cam Schlittler stopped all hopes of a Boston comeback.

In a historic effort, the 24-year-old rookie pitched eight shutout innings, striking out 12, and didn’t allow a walk. Schlittler is from Walpole, Massachusetts, and grew up a Red Sox fan.

The Sox became the first team under this wild card format to win Game 1 but lose the series.

New York now advances to face the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Divisional Series. It’ll be a best-of-five starting Saturday in Toronto.
