The MLB playoffs are on to the divisional round in the National and American leagues after wild-card action that began the 2025 postseason and eliminated four teams.

The winners from the wild-card series now face the top-seeded teams in the National and American leagues for the right to play in the championship series as the road to the World Series ramps up. The No. 1- and 2-seeded teams had byes into the divisional round.

Both leagues present some intriguing matchups. In the National League, the No. 1 Milwaukee Brewers play their rival Chicago Cubs, while the No. 2 Philadelphia Phillies square off against the reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. In the American League, the top-seeded Toronto Blue Jays meet AL East rival New York Yankees and the second-seeded Seattle Mariners face the Detroit Tigers.

All four series begin play Saturday, Oct. 4.

MLB playoff format: How do MLB playoffs work?

The wild-card round, which included two series in each league, were a best-of-three format. Three of the four series went to a decisive Game 3. The Cubs over the San Diego Padres, the Yankees over the Boston Red Sox and the Tigers over the Cleveland Guardians went the distance, while the Dodgers swept the Cincinnati Reds, 2-0.

The divisional round is a best-of-five series format. The winners of the divisional series advance to the NL Championship Series and AL Championship Series. The NLCS and ALCS are best-of-seven.

Pennant winners in the NL and AL meet in the World Series, which begins Friday, Oct. 24.
