Those who know me, know that I’m an Atlanta Braves baseball fan. I watch almost all 162 games, listen to the ones I don’t watch and read and listen to multiple blogs, news organizations and podcasts, as they talk about the Braves. One of my most prized possessions then, are the framed front pages of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, from when the Braves won in 1995 and 2021. I love looking over and seeing these newspaper pages, slightly yellowed with age, immortalizing the story of two World Series championships. Often, newspapers (especially local ones) serve as the unofficial historians for a community, especially when it comes to sports. After having spent 11 months in northeast Indiana, I know you (our readers) feel likewise. It is with great excitement and anticipation then that I want to announce that Friday night high school football (and later basketball) is back in the Saturday print editions of The Herald Republican, The News Sun and The Star! For the past few years, this has been difficult given our press time and delivery constraints. However, we’ve been able to work through these challenges the past few weeks. With planning and cooperation by many of our different teams, including production, administration and the newsroom — and a lot of effort on the part of our sports staff — football is back! In the coming weeks, we will do the same with our coverage of high school basketball. Our eagle-eyed readers will no doubt know that it has been back for a few weeks now, but before making the official announcement, we wanted to make sure we had all the bugs worked out. Production was able to give the newsroom an extra hour late at night, while you are celebrating your team’s victory (hopefully) to get the stories written, photos processed and pages completed so we can present to you coverage of Friday night’s games. The sports writers (Ken Fillmore, Matt Getts, Jeff Jones, Mark Murdock and David Vantress) hustle to get coverage in Saturday’s newspapers. Then, after meeting deadline and you are quite possibly in bed asleep, they concentrate on producing even more coverage for you to enjoy online. We then follow up with even more for our Tuesday editions. As loyal readers know, we take our sports seriously, just as you do. People have been wanting more timely coverage, and by making some changes in our processes, we are now able to provide that. For those of you who subscribe online, you likely won’t see much of a change, since we have had these scores and stories on our website all along, but we still want to inform you of this change as well, in case you want to grab a Saturday paper from a newsstand in order to have a printed copy of a special game. Thanks for reading, subscribing and caring so much about local news — and high school sports— in DeKalb, LaGrange, Noble and Steuben counties and beyond!
