NEW YORK — Trevor Story delivered a message to his teammates after the Red Sox traded Rafael Devers to the Giants on June 15.
“What we have in this room is enough,” Story said he told them. “It is tough to see that in the moment after you trade a guy like that. But just that the belief is in the people in this room. I think guys need to hear that, and need to hear it from a player.”

The Red Sox will attempt to sweep their best-of-three AL Wild Card Series against the Yankees on Wednesday at 6:08 p.m. Boston beat New York 3-1 in Game 1 on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.
At the time of trading Devers to the Giants, Boston was 37-36. The Sox went 52-37 after the trade.
“It took some time to get our footing back underneath us after that, but we played well,” Story said.
Boston went 4-8 in its first 12 games without Devers before heating up.
“I think we showed the type of team that we are,” Story said. “And obviously, good enough to be in the postseason. We like where we are at right now.”

Story confirmed he played sick in Game 1, but he said he’s “feeling much better” for Game 2.
“The last two days were no good,” Story said. “Got what (Alex Bregman) had. No fun. But obviously a lot more energy today. So that’s nice to say that and be able to go through kind of a full pregame and more of a regular routine.”
The Red Sox’ offensive identity has changed multiple times this year, including after the Devers trade.
“We started with the two big boys hitting in the middle of the lineup, (Triston) Casas and Raffy,” manager Alex Cora said. “Casas gets hurt. Raffy gets traded. The kids (Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer) come up. They get hurt. Guys that are good baseball players are doing their job. (Nate) Eaton, Sogie (Nick Sogard) — they’ve been good for us. Hammy (David Hamilton) has played a lot better lately.

“In the playoffs, home runs matter,” Cora added. “It is hard to hit three (hits) in a row. This is our offense. We have to grind out at-bats, we have to take our walks, we have to run the bases well, we have to be on point offensively because we don’t have the power other teams have. And yesterday was a good day for us. We have to do it again tonight.”
