Among the many names floated as possible San Francisco Giants managerial candidates, there are lots of recently retired catchers.
Call it the Stephen Vogt effect, perhaps. Two years ago, the Giants interviewed Vogt, the former A’s and Giants catcher, before ultimately hiring Bob Melvin. Vogt has taken Cleveland to two consecutive postseasons.

The Chronicle has learned that former big league catcher Kurt Suzuki was scheduled to interview with the Giants on Friday afternoon. Suzuki, who played for the A’s, Twins, Nationals, Braves and Angels, won a championship with the Nationals and was an All-Star with the Twins. A veteran of 16 seasons behind the plate, Suzuki, who turns 42 on Saturday, is known for his high energy level and positivity, which are Vogt hallmarks.
Suzuki works as a special adviser in the Angels front office under general manager Perry Minasian, the older brother of Giants GM Zack Minasian.
Suzuki is also a potential candidate in Minnesota, while recently ousted Twins manager Rocco Baldelli could be a possible Giants target.
Vogt’s right-hand man, Craig Albernaz, is likely to get a look from San Francisco.

Albernaz is a former Giants bullpen coach; he served on Gabe Kapler’s staff before joining Vogt, his best friend, with the Guardians. Albernaz is not a recently retired big league catcher, he was a minor league player and Vogt’s teammate in the Tampa Bay system, then a coach, but he was a catcher in the minors and he’s 42.
With Cleveland’s ouster from the playoffs Thursday, the Giants are free to request permission to speak to Albernaz for their manager spot. He was a finalist for the White Sox’s and Marlins’ jobs last winter but withdrew his name when the Guardians moved him from bench coach to associate manager.
Others who fit this mold include Buster Posey‘s former backup, Nick Hundley, also 42, who is a special adviser with the Rangers. Curt Casali, 36, has the same profile; he’s working in the Reds front office since retiring from playing earlier this year.
