SEATTLE — Detroit Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty will start Game 3 of the American League Division Series when it returns to Detroit on Tuesday afternoon.

If there’s a Game 4 on Wednesday, right-hander Casey Mize will get the ball for the Tigers.

Manager A.J. Hinch made the announcement Sunday.

The two pitchers are switching order from the Wild Card Series in Cleveland, where Mize started Game 2 and Flaherty followed in the decisive Game 3. Flaherty will be pitching on normal four days’ rest, while Mize will get a couple of extra days.

“Every series is a little different,” Hinch said. “Both are working off relatively controllable pitch counts, so that wasn’t really a factor.

“There are some slight reasons why we’re doing it. Obviously, Jack on a regular routine, regular rest is really attractive. When he catches his rhythm and timing and execution and the things that we’ve seen over the last few starts, that’s really brought out a good version of him and someone that we trust a ton.”

“And Casey will get a little extra rest, a little extra work in between his games. But we feel really good about both. We could do it the other way and feel completely the same, but we have to choose, and we’re going to roll with this order.”

Game 3 in Cleveland was Flaherty’s 10th career playoff start and his third in a winner-take-all game, including the 2019 NLDS clincher at Atlanta. His postseason résumé: 11 games, 10 starts, 51 2/3 innings, 50 strikeouts, a 5.05 ERA (4.54 FIP).

“(Tuesday) is going to be a lot of fun,” Flaherty said. “Hometown games are incredible. Playoff games in general are incredible. You get to be at home, get the home crowd behind you.

“You’re hoping for a good atmosphere and a good crowd. Detroit shows up, and it’s something I’m looking forward to.”

Right-hander Logan Gilbert (6-6, 3.44 ERA) will start for the Mariners in Game 3. Gilbert pitched well and led the M’s to win at Comerica Park on July 13.
