The weather in the Phoenix area was almost as bad Friday, with rain showers almost everywhere and temperatures that in some areas didn’t get out of the 40s.
What makes me angry about this is that this forecast had been known for 48 hours and was confirmed early this morning.
Why they didn’t cancel this game at 10 a.m. and not make the Cubs take the long bus ride from Mesa to Glendale is beyond me.
At this writing, per MLB’s scoreboard page, two other games (Giants/Reds at Goodyear and Diamondbacks/Angels at Tempe) have been cancelled and another (Padres/Brewers at Maryvale is listed as “postponed,” though I doubt it’ll be made up. The Cubs/White Sox gam won’t be.
Two other Phoenix-area games (Guardians/A’s at Mesa, Angels/Royals at Surprise) are under way, with rain ongoing and temperatures about 50 degrees. Two other Cactus League games (Dodgers/Mariners at Peoria and Rangers/Rockies at Scottsdale) are scheduled for this evening and even if it stops raining, I suspect they might cancel those due to cold.
The White Sox waited about 30 minutes after the scheduled game time to call things off. You know, I could understand that if this were a regular-season game with limited makeup opportunities, but this? A spring-training game where exactly one Cub who’ll be in the Opening Day lineup (Justin Turner) made the trip, and even the home team White Sox only started a handful of regulars?
There couldn’t have been that many tickets sold and the number of people who showed up has to be pretty small. Be better, MLB. This is what the White Sox said about the cancellation:
The weather’s supposed to be much nicer in the Phoenix area Saturday, when the Cubs will return to Sloan Park to face the Mariners. As of this writing, Matthew Boyd is scheduled to start for the Cubs. There’s no starter listed as of now for Seattle. Game time is 2:05 p.m. CT and TV coverage will be via Marquee Sports Network. There will also be a radio broadcast via the Mariners radio team.
Glad they didn’t play Friday, but… seriously, they should have called this one off earlier this morning.
