DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers have sent the American League Division Series back to Seattle after the team’s offensive outburst against the Mariners bullpen.

The Mariners let an early 3-0 lead slip away as the Tigers scored nine unanswered runs. The Tigers scored nine runs in the first three games combined before taking charge in Game 4.

The Mariners got on the board first in the top of the second inning. New dad Josh Naylor doubled down the right field line, and Dominic Canzone’s single brought Naylor home.

Josh Naylor confirmed to KOMO News before the game that his wife gave birth and “it’s good,” but politely requested to keep family details private.

With the Mariners building a rally in the top of the fourth inning, the team had the bases loaded with no outs.

Victor Robles bounced into a double play, scoring Naylor in the process. A run is a run, but the Mariners would have liked to get more in that situation.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Naylor made an excellent defensive play to snuff out a Tigers rally.

After Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres singled to center field, Naylor handled Colt Keith’s hot shot to first base.

Naylor smartly tagged Torres before stomping on first base to ensure the Mariners get both outs. Had Naylor tagged the base first, it would have no longer been a force play, and Torres would have been safe.

The Mariners scored again in the fifth inning when Cal Raleigh’s single plated Randy Arozarena.

Bryce Miller was cruising into the fifth inning when he ran into some trouble. After a leadoff single and a forceout, Tigers catcher Dillon Dingler doubled to score Zach McKinstry.

Dan Wilson replaced Miller with Gabe Speier, the Mariners’ lefty specialist and a leverage pitcher who had been lights out so far in the series.

A double and a single by Jahmai Jones and Javier Báez, respectively, tied the score at three runs apiece. Speier was able to escape the inning with no further damage.

A massive 454-foot home run by Riley Greene then gave the Tigers a 4-3 lead.

The Tigers continued to pile on the runs against a normally stout Mariners bullpen, putting up four more runs in the sixth inning and one more in the eighth and ninth.

Game 5 will be back at T-Mobile Park Friday.
