The Tigers overcame a sluggish weekend against another National League Central foe, the Cincinnati Reds, by hammering the Pirates in the first game of the series on Tuesday night. Detroit jumped out to an early lead, and though Pittsburgh bounced back to take a brief lead, the Bengals roared back with five unanswered runs, including putting a three-spot up in the seventh inning.
With a win to get the team back on track, the Tigers extend their lead atop the American League Central to 9.5 games over the Cleveland Guardians. The Pirates are still at the bottom of the NL Central, 11 games back of a Wild Card spot.
