There was a somewhat popular tee shirt years back with the message, “I root for 2 teams, the Mets and whoever plays the Yankees.”  That sums up my feelings although I don’t dislike (notice I did not use hate) the Yanks nearly as much as I used to.  Maybe because it’s been 16 years since they won the Fall Classic and many of their arrogant fans have been humbled.

I’m honest when I say that I’m jealous of the Yankees success and wish my team made the playoffs just about every year and never has a losing season.  Growing up a Mets fan I did have plenty to root for as we won the World Series in 1969, lost in 7 games in 1973 and then won it all again in 1986.  Even in recent years we have had our moments but let’s be honest…if you’re a Mets fan you usually end up disappointed like this year when we underachieved.

Back to the Yankees.  Once the Mets were out of the playoff picture I turned my attention to rooting against them and the Phillies for pretty much the same reason…not wanting their fans to celebrate.  So when the Blue Jays eliminated the Yankees on Wednesday night I breathed a tremendous sigh of relief while Yankee fans groaned.  They now have to “wait until next year” which is what I say pretty much every September or October.  As for the Phillies, well when I recorded this they were still alive but I’m optimistic the Dodgers will finish them off.  In full disclosure I despise LA but somebody has to win that series and I’d rather them then Philadelphia.

I know this sounds very petty and it is.  As bad as the Mets collapse was this season it would be made much worse if Yankees and Phillies fans have months of rubbing it in my face.  Jump on the misery bandwagon, there is plenty of room.
