FORT MYERS, Fla. —

Mike Greenwell, a former Boston Red Sox left fielder and current Lee County commissioner, died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at age 62 after battling medullary thyroid cancer.

The Lee County Government announced his passing on Facebook, noting that his illness had prevented him from attending public meetings in person.

A North Fort Myers High School graduate, he played for the Boston Red Sox from 1982 to 1996 and was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame in 2008. Read more about the death of Mike Greenwell here.
