Veteran MLB pitcher and former Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel has signed a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Keuchel, 37, will be assigned to the Royals’ Triple-A affiliate Omaha Storm Chasers. If promoted to the Royals’ roster, he will earn a $2 million prorated salary, per Passan. He joins a Royals organization that is currently 45-48 overall, good for second place in the American League Central and 14 games behind the division-leading Detroit Tigers. The Royals are also four games out of an AL Wild Card spot.
Keuchel, a 13-year MLB veteran, last pitched in four games for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2024. Prior to that, he pitched in 10 games for the Minnesota Twins in 2023, and pitched 14 games in 2022 for the Chicago White Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers.
The southpaw pitcher rose to stardom as a starter for the Houston Astros from 2012-18, during which he won the 2015 American League Cy Young Award, earned four Gold Glove awards and two All-Star selections.
Keuchel also pitched one season for the Atlanta Braves in 2019, and finished fifth in American League Cy Young Award voting in 2020 while with the White Sox.
For his 13-year MLB career, Keuchel has a 103-92 record, 4.04 ERA and 1,254 strikeouts in 1,642.1 innings pitched in 282 games, including 267 starts.
“Keuchel is a veteran who can provide the Royals exactly what they need, innings and depth in their starting rotation that has been decimated by injuries,” said Joe Noga, Cleveland Guardians reporter for cleveland.com / The Plain Dealer. “For the Royals to be competitive in the second half, Keuchel and any sort of trade deadline acquisition must provide a stabilizing force.”
