Thus far the Minnesota Twins managerial search has been nothing short of crickets. A couple different sources have opined on potential candidates, but there has yet to be anything substantial in terms of actual discussions.

Maybe team president Derek Falvey is playing his cards close to his chest. Then again, he didn’t have much of a direction to offer for his search in the first place, so that could be part of the problem too.

It’s not necessarily important that Minnesota works through their process quickly. The goal is to get the next manager right, even if Rocco Baldelli wasn’t wrong. The search now includes a Boston Red Sox coach.

Ramon Vazquez may be Minnesota Twins first interviewee

This season the Boston Red Sox made the postseason as a wild card team. They were bounced in a three-game series by the New York Yankees, but finished with a respectable 89-73 record. Alex Cora and his staff are expected to be back, but the Twins are interested in bench coach Ramon Vazquez.

Vazquez is a 49-year-old Puerto Rican that spent nine years in the majors. He played for Cleveland in 2005 and 2006, while finishing his career with the Pirates in 2009.

A background in player development seems like a key for the Minnesota Twins. Vazquez started his coaching career in 2014 as a minor league instructor with the Houston Astros. He has worked as a hitting instructor, infield coach, and minor league manager as well.

The San Diego Padres added Vazquez to their major league staff in 2017 where he primarily worked with infielders. Alex Cora added him to the Boston Red Sox coaching staff in 2018, and it was something of a full-circle moment with the two having been traded for one another in 2005.

Prior to being named Cora’s bench coach in 2022, Vazquez worked in various roles including quality control, advanced scouting, and first base coach. He won a game as manager for the Red Sox this season while Alex Cora was away from the team.

With just one publicly identified candidate thus far, it’s difficult to decipher exactly what the Minnesota Twins may be looking for. Vazquez would obviously be a first-time manager, and that much seems like a near-certainty for them to target.
