San Diego Padres starting pitcher Michael King cruised through his first three innings against the Seattle Mariners. He ran into trouble with two outs in the top of the fourth inning when Randy Arozarena broke up the no hitter and the shutout with a solo home run to left field.
The Mariners used that momentum to get a 6-1 win and a series sweep at Petco Park, Sunday.
King faced Rowdy Tellez after the Arozarena home run and allowed a double off the left field wall. Mitch Garver singled and moved Tellez to third. Leody Taveras hit a ground rule double to move Garver to third and score Tellez to give the Mariners a 2-1 lead.
Miles Mastrobuoni gave Seattle a 3-1 lead with a single to drive in Garver and move Taveras to third. King ended the two-out rally with a strikeout of Leo Rivas.
King surrendered a fourth run in the game in the top of the sixth inning after a dropped fly ball in right field by Tatis Jr. He was running toward the right field line and attempted to cradle the ball near his body to make the catch, but the ball hit the heel of his glove and popped out and fell to the turf. Arozarena reached second on the play and advanced to third base on a fly out to left-center. Garver hit a single down the third base line and Arozarena scored to give Seattle a 4-1 lead.
Yuki Matsui came on in the top of the ninth inning attempting to keep the deficit at three. However, he issued three consecutive walks and was replaced by Alek Jacob. He gave up a sacrifice fly ball to right field by Cal Raleigh to give Seattle a 5-1 lead. The Mariners added another run with a bloop single to left by Julio Rodriguez to take 6-1 lead. Jacob was able to get two fly outs to end the inning without any further damage.
San Diego started the scoring for the day with a solo home run from Fernando Tatis Jr. to leadoff the bottom of the first inning to put the Padres up, 1-0.
The Padres attempted to mount a ninth inning rally with two walks to open the bottom of the frame against Mariners reliever Eduard Bazardo. Xander Bogaerts hit a line drive to left that was caught by Arozarena. Gavin Sheets hit a fly ball to right for the second out and Jake Cronenworth popped out to short to end the game.
Seattle starter Bryan Woo dominated the San Diego lineup after the leadoff home run in the first by Tatis Jr. he completed seven innings allowed five hits and recorded five strikeouts. The Padres managed to get just two runners into scoring position and finished the series 0-for-21 in those opportunities.
San Diego is off Monday and returns to play in Toronto, Tuesday at 4:07 p.m.
