The Los Angeles Angels have been sitting around the 70-win mark for years, and now is the time to change that. One of the first moves the Angels should make to help boost their roster is signing Dustin May.
The Angels are in a weird spot. It’s not like they’re the worst team in the MLB right now, but not many people would call them contenders either.
The middle ground isn’t a great place to be, and in this case, the Angels need to add some more proven players just to get the ball rolling. Now, that doesn’t mean signing only players over 35 years old, but that doesn’t mean everyone needs to be extremely young either.
After being traded from the Los Angeles Dodgers, Dustin May is now on the Boston Red Sox. Let’s break down why May will likely part ways with the Red Sox and why his new home should be with the Los Angeles Angels.
This is a PREDICTION, not a REPORT.

Dustin May Joining Los Angeles Angels in MLB Free Agency
May hasn’t spent much time in Boston, but it seems like he could be on the move again. Per Zach Pressnell of Sports Illustrated, “With the Red Sox looking to add pitching in the offseason, it’s hard to imagine they’ll look to reunite with May. May hasn’t been great since returning from injuries, and the Red Sox need to add pitchers who move the needle.”
This makes sense as the Red Sox are in a much better shot to contend than the Angels. The Red Sox need elite players to help them make a deep playoff push.
Meanwhile, the Angels would just be hoping May can be a solid contributor and get them to that 80-85 win mark.
Last year, May had -0.6 WAR, but in 2023, he was much better. Now, in fairness, May missing all of 2024 presents another worry, considering the drop-off in production came after this major injury.
At the same time, though, the Angels should hope that May will be better after having another year to recover.
How Dustin May Fits in Los Angeles
In 2023, May had 1.4 WAR, a 4-1 record, a 2.63 ERA, and 6.4 K/9. If the Angels can get May closer to that form than what he was in 2025, they’re going to get a great value on this signing.
Outside of Yusei Kikuchi, the Angels don’t have much to depend on. Overall, the Angels’ rotation doesn’t project great for next year, and they need all the help they can get. Last season, the Angels had a quality start percentage of 30 from their starting pitchers, which was tied for five games under the league average.
May could help the Angels’ rotation improve, even if it’s just slightly.
Dustin May Stats
May showed a ton of promise early in his career, but his stats have never been elite. 2025 was a bit of a rough year for May, though, as his WAR dipped to the lowest mark of his MLB career.
In 2025, May went 7-11 with a 4.96 ERA, 8.4 K/9, and -0.6 WAR.
Still, May is young enough and has the talent to be a meaningful signing for the Los Angeles Angels, who are looking to turn things around.
