SAN DIEGO – A lead off home run by Fernando Tatis Jr. was all the San Diego Padres could muster in a 6-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners, completing a series sweep in the third Vedder Cup meeting at Petco Park on Sunday afternoon.

Tatis extended to yank an away sweeper out to left-center field, his 14th round-tripper of the season, but the Padres were unable to get runners in scoring position beyond a Jose Iglesias single after a Jake Cronenworth knock in the second, a Tatis double-play in the eighth and a pair of walks in the ninth.

The Mariners chalked up three in the fourth on a two-out Randy Arozarena solo shot, then RBI singles by Leody Taveras and Miles Mastrobuoni. They added on with a Mitch Garver RBI single in the sixth and a sacrifice fly by Cal Raleigh plus an RBI single by Julio Rodríguez in the ninth after a pair of walks.

Bryan Woo earned his fifth win of the season, scattering five hits over seven innings of work with five strikeouts and no walks and Carlos Vargas notched his fifth hold with a scoreless eighth. Michael King took his second loss of the season in 5 1/3 innings as he allowed six hits and four runs (three earned) to go with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Seattle scored all three of their runs in the third with two outs, as after Arozarena’s long ball Rowdy Tellez doubled and Garver singled. Arozarena came home unearned in the sixth after reaching on a Tatis fielding error and scoring on a Garver single.

Dylan Moore, Leo Rivas and J.P. Crawford all walked against Yuki Matsui in the ninth, before Alek Jacob allowed a Cal Raleigh sacrifice fly and a Rodríguez RBI single.

The Padres rarely put Woo in jeopardy, as the Seattle starter was able to strand Cronenworth on third and Jose Iglesias on second after a Taveras error in the second by inducing an Elias Díaz ground out.

It was the only time San Diego put a runner in scoring position until Iglesias was left on third after a Tatis double-play ball and a Luis Arraez flyout in the eighth. The Padres finished 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, capping a series where they went 0-for on all 21 of their opportunities with a RISP and stranded 22.

After a day off on Monday, the Padres will kick off a six-game road trip at Toronto on Tuesday, May 18. First pitch is scheduled for 4:07 p.m. and neither side has announced an anticipated starting pitcher as of Sunday evening.
